Video to GIF Maker
Turn a video clip into a GIF or animated WebP. Trim, crop, change speed, add a caption, and keep it under a size limit like Discord's 10 MB. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
How to turn a video into a GIF
- Add a video: MP4, MOV and WebM all work, including screen recordings and phone videos.
- Drag the green handles under the preview to choose the part you want. Short clips make the best GIFs.
- Optionally crop it (1:1 suits chats and social posts), change the speed, or add a caption.
- Click Create GIF, check the result, and download it.
Keeping GIFs small
GIF is an old format, so file size grows quickly. The biggest savings come from a shorter clip, a smaller width and a lower frame rate: 480 px at 15 fps is a good starting point, and 10 fps roughly halves the size again. Clips with a still background (screen recordings, talking heads) compress far better than ones where the camera moves.
If a site has an upload limit, set Keep under (Discord allows 10 MB without Nitro). The tool then reduces colors, size and frame rate step by step until the file fits, and tells you what it changed.
GIF or animated WebP?
Animated WebP keeps full color and is often much smaller than a GIF for camera footage (screen recordings and flat graphics can be smaller as GIFs). It plays in every modern browser, Discord and most chat apps. Choose GIF when you need it to work everywhere, such as in email or older software.
